As you know, we recently traveled to Vermont with another couple. This meant that we were up for a little bit of a car ride. The trip there, which should take 4 1/2 hours took 6 1/2, but thankfully, on the way home we hit little to no traffic and made it home in the anticipated time. This meant some speedy driving on our friends part (don’t worry nothing dangerous), and during this drive he decided to inform us of “speeding etiquette” which we had never heard of. Therefore, I was asked to reach out to you my dear readers to find out if his theory is just crazy, or if it’s something others have actually heard of? I personally am going with the former…but we’ll see what happens!
Speeding Etiquette: “The Flying V”
The theory goes like this. If you have say 2 cars (who don’t know each other) all going 10-15 miles over the speed limit on the highway, that each car should take turns accepting the risk of being pulled over by taking the lead. As you know, a cop most likely will pull over the person going the fastest. So this theory would allow for your odds of being pulled over to drop. If you are in the lead, you drive for a period of time, then pull over to the right lane and allow the next speeding car to pass you. They would then take the lead, and do the same. This is what we called “The Flying V” (after my friends last name). We called it that because when I lovingly mocked my friend, I told him that no one would CHOOSE to take the risk. I then said that it isn’t like a flock of geese all taking turns at being the tip of the V. They were all working towards a common goal of travel. On the road, why would I care if another car got pulled over? Why would I voluntarily take that risk? Am I a bad person?
My friend believes that this “etiquette” exists and that people know about it. I personally think that he made it up. What do you think? Would you voluntarily take the risk? And if you did take the lead, do you think any other car would take turns with you as you drove? Do you partake in the “Flying V”?
Ok random thought over…please proceed with your day.
I’ve never heard that. I’m thinking he made it up.
me too! lol
I hate to admit it but I knew a guy in college that had a similar opinion only it was 2 cars instead of 3.
Maybe it’s a guy thing?
Really? lol wow…I guess my friend isn’t the only one then!
Never heard of it. But, then, silly me-I go the speed limit (or no more than 5 over) and don’t offer to take that bullet at all!
5 miles over? good for you? I’m normally a standard ten. lol
I have never heard of such a thing, but maybe that explains why some people speed past me and then once in front of me, they slow down. Grrr, that annoys me SO much!
And I’m with you, why do I care if someone else gets a ticket and I’m not going to voluntarily take the risk; my insurance is expensive enough, thank you! ?
I agree! no need for extra risk! I hate when people speed up then slow down too…it’s like what are you doing???
I have never heard of that before. I think he is playing this game by himself and the other cars are just trying to pass him? I understand his theory though but that is because I drive fast and would like to lessen the risk of getting pulled over.
I told him that too…I think he is playing himself lol.
I think he made it up too! Never heard of it before.
I’ev never hear of this, but think its an awesome idea. Imagine that, people working together for one common goal. Get to where you are going as quick as possible and reducing your chances of getting a speeding ticket. They should name a highway after this individual
Well “Mr. J”…how interesting you think it’s an awesome idea! haha
KI never heard of that. I know that over here in cA where everyone drives way too fast and ridiculous we dont do that. What happns over here is that everyone just tends to speed together and therefore no one is really in the lead and if you look at it without a radar it doesnt look like any one is speeding. But ya I dont think anyone would assume that risk and I also feel that would be too hard to coordinate lol
hahah what a great idea! everyone goes fast and then they don’t know who to catch!
Like Amanda said, even if it doesn’t exist, it does help explain some otherwise unexplainable driving. I choose to believe this exists, and the next time someone speeds up, gets in front of me, and then slows a few miles later, instead of getting mad, I will thank him for time-sharing the ticket risk of being the lead car.
You can thank the flying V next time that happens..lol
I have never heard of such etiquette! I basically go as quick as I can and then if I see a cop, I hit the brakes and then go the speed limit.
that’s what I do too!! I guess it’s not the best plan either! lol
While I am a huge fan of our buddy, he is absolutely out of his F’in mind. First of all I never heard of this, but even if it were a “thing” why the hell would I risk my money to lower someone else’s risk when I could just chill in the back and let the other person get the ticket.
This sounds like some backwoods Georgia, good ol’ boys technique
As much as it pains me to agree with someone who calls themselves captain awesome, this has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.
How nice of you to comment Corporal! lol I’m glad we are on the same page!
