It’s Things I Love Thursday Over at The Diaper Diaries today, and today I want to talk about my love ofNetflix! I am not trying to brag, but I jumped on the Netflix* train back before Netflix was popular. I was working at my first job that I hated, and I spent a lot of time on the Internet. I found this wonderful company that actually mails DVDs to your home, and when you are finished you just ship them back the DVD and they send another one. Genius! I must say that I wish I bought stock in this company back then…I think I could’ve made some good money…but I digress…Netflix is a wonderful concept and although others have tried, I don’t think they’ve mastered the art of mail in DVD’s.
When Tivocame about, and I became obsessed with the amount of shows I could Tivo and then watch, I became overwhelmed with television and cancelled my Netflix membership. Over time my Tivo, and lifetime membership wore out and we moved on to cable’s DVR (but I stand by Tivo being the superior product! Why oh why Tivo must you charge $250 on top of monthly fees for your HD Box!?) Now, fast forward to the present and behold the wonderful technology of STREAMING VIDEO! My husband and I just learned that we can stream shows from our laptop…and with a cord plugged into our TV, we can watch it on a big screen! AMAZING! Then we find out for the low price of $8.99/month through Netflix, we can get 1 DVD out at a time, and have unlimited Instant Streaming! So Netflix has become a part of our lives again.
Currently, we are watching the first season of 24 on DVD. My husband has never seen it and I insisted that Jack Bauer the early years is the best….but then simultaneously we were able to stream season 1 and 2 of Weeds! (Ok I know it’s sad that I get this excited about TV and Movies, and by the way…if you haven’t seen either of these shows I recommend watching them!)
Netflix*has many great plans that can suit anyone’s needs…
- There’s the plan we have which is $8.99/month and this includes 1 DVD out at a time, but you can get as many as you want/ month. This also includes unlimited streaming
- For $13.99/month you get 2 DVD’s out at a time, and unlimited streaming
- For $16.99/month you get 3 DVD’s out at a time, and unlimited Streaming
- For $23.99/month you get 4 DVD’s out at a time, and unlimited Streaming
I have to admit that the movies and TV shows that are streaming are not always the best and most up to date, but it is a good go to when there is nothing else to watch. My husband and I were bummed after the shocking ending of Weeds season 2 that we were unable to get season 3 to stream, but hey that’s life!
I also have to say, that if you have Tivo…Netflix and Tivo made a deal that you can stream all movies to the Tivo without having to wait for the DVD in the mail! It’s an amazing concept and I am still a bit depressed that Tivo is no longer a part of my life….So Tivo if you are reading this can you please give the HD box for free like cable companies do? Pretty Please?
That’s true, during the regular TV season we dont have time since there are way too many shows we watch…since now there is nothing on it’s great! ?
I love Weeds.
I never had showtime…but now that I watched the first 2 seasons and most of 3 I am addicted! Great show!
We had Netflix WAY back in the day too, but really I have no time during most of the year because we watch too many TV shows. It would be nice in the summer though when nothing is on.
I’ve never tried Netflix before… but it sounds like a good deal!
I have to say that I was a member of Netflix too before they became popular. I use to love putting my list of movies in que and then having a free return envelope. We didn’t have cable, so it was a treat in our mailbox every few days. I too am a HUGE fan of the tv series Weeds. I own all four seasons on DVD and watch them over-and-over again.
We LOVE netflix (I read this blog excitedly because it is my new obsession, too!) We have an xBox360 (I’m married to a nerd but I love him…ok and I’m kind of a nerd, too) and you can stream right to it, so we can watch all of the ‘stream instantly’ movies right on our tv. It is the best thing ever. Also, as I’m a teacher who just survived the last few weeks of school, I can stream directly onto my computer at work which plays on my smart board and allows me to have really, REALLY easy movie days with my students-and there’s a great selection of family and educational movies on streaming. A friend of mine had been trying to convince me to get netflix for quite a while, and my husband finally agreed-we’re so glad we did!
In other news-I really like your blog. It is very well written and insightful! I’ve been trying to get one started for…too long. I’m quite impressed!
Thanks Tracy! I love blogging. I definitely recommend it. With things like blogspot and wordpress it’s easy. I’m so glad we got netflix back! Especially over the summer. I think thats amazing about your smart board at school. I guess they’ve come a long way since backboards and VHS tapes! lol I bet your class loves it! I know I always loved movie days!
