The holiday season always brings out the BEST Hallmark movies! This past Sunday I watched A movie called “A Dog Named Christmas”. The movie is based on a book written by Greg Kincaid of the same name. The story is about a mentally challenged young man who adopts a dog for the holiday season. Hallmark has partnered with Petfinder to create an actual program called “Foster a lonely pet for the holiday season”. This program was created so that the animal can have a loving home for the holidays, have a chance to get out of the shelter, and hopefully find a forever home.
As many of you know I am a true dog lover. I believe that they all deserve to have a loving home. They love unconditionally, and just ask for your companionship in return. I truly wish that I myself could participate in this program, but I will be out of town for the holidays with my family. I would love to convince them to participate in the program, but since it’s not my home, I can’t push too hard. So in an attempt to do all I can for shelter animals, I wanted to reach out to you, my readers and ask that you consider fostering a dog for the holidays. If you go here you can just put in the state you live in, and find local participating shelters in your area.
Now let me make this clear. I honestly believe this program is set up knowing that most people would be unable to return the dog to the shelter once they take it in their home. I mean who would be able to resist? Dogs give nothing but love. I honestly can’t imagine taking in a dog and ACTUALLY returning it after the holidays. Just thinking of them in cages makes me so sad.
If anything, a program such as this can raise awareness of the wonderful dogs out there that are waiting for homes in shelters. But keep in mind dogs are NOT good Christmas presents! It is a huge commitment, and should be a decision made by the whole family.
So bring a shelter dog into your home this holiday season…or keep it forever! And you can find all the joys a dog can bring!
My daughter’s friend and her family foster dogs and have been for about a year. They have had some wonderful, loving dogs over the last year. And, shed a tear when they leave, but are happy to see them going home!
Merry Christmas.
My husband and I plan to foster dogs after the holidays! We are looking forward to helping in that way since it’s not the right time for us to take a permanent dog. It’s a great way to help!
What a great idea! I WANT a dog so badly! Unfortunately, we cannot have one in the home we are renting…I don’t know maybe we can break our landlord down after some time. There are lots of loving dogs out there that need a nice home and family…so this is an awesome program! Great post!
I worked on my landlord or over a year when I was in an apartment. I reminded him what a good tenent I was and told him I’d get a small dog, and that I would even pay a pet deposit! He gave in eventually! And then I got the best dog in the world:)
This is so great for people who are able to help. I was watching the movie and hoping that something like this would be made into a reality. Also, thanks for posting that pets are NOT a good Christmas present, but a life-long investment.
I think pets are probably the WORST christmas present! (i should do a whole post on this!) each breed is different and families need to pick for themselves what works best. It was a cute movie right?
Sounds like a great program. We adopted our dog from our local animal shelter when he was a puppy. I can’t imagine paying hundreds of dollars for a puppy from a puppy mill now.
I got my dog from a breeder because I really wanted to be sure that I got a small dog since I was in an apartment at the time…see my parents got a dog (mix) and was told it would be at the most 20lbs and it is now 70! So I couldn’t have that happen so I wanted to be sure I saw the mom and dad..as you can see my Tinkerbell is 3.5.lol but if we get another dog it will definitely be through a shelter!
