I can't believe I've never read that poem before - and I love the reference to Franken especially.

In our school district they have "winter break" and have dispensed with the holiday aspect completely!

First of all, the rumor that the White House Christmas tree will be called a holiday tree is untrue. Look these things up on www.snopes.com before you pass them on. Secondly - look at the internet website for every one of those retailers mentioned - the word Christmas appears prominently on every one, with no mention of Kwanzaa or Ramadan as the poem says. Sears has the Heroes at Home link - to "help bring Christmas to military families" and has a "Christmas Across America" link. K-Mart has the slogan "Make Christmas Count" which is maybe something those who are all caught up in sending this poem around ought to be doing instead. I think this idea that Christians are somehow being persecuted at this time of year is just silly. I totally agree that the true meaning of the holiday has often been lost - but Christians have contributed and bought into the materialism hook, line and sinker - no one has cone it to them. The "true meaning" of the season is that God loves us so much that he sent his Son here to die for our sins. We should respond by renewing our committment to God and loving and serving those around us, not by attacking others and blaming them for our faithlessness.
