Great post. I've always been a dog lover. I just can't understand how anyone can treat a dog with cruelty. They are the most loving animals in the world. If you can't love a dog, how can you love anyone else?

Jen, I found your blog today through BlogHer and I just want to commend you for this post about puppy mills. I am a fellow Wordpress blogger, and I periodically blog about such issues. I also link to the HSUS Stop Puppy Mills website as well as their Protect Seals page, just to get the word out. I am convinced that if most people knew what was behind pet store puppies and the like, they would be appalled and never buy a puppy from a pet store or BYB (back yard breeder). I believe the same of other issues, namely, those affecting animals. So, I try to tactfully make it known.

Incidentally, my childhood dog was adopted from North Shore, and, while I don't live in LI, they have always served as a sort of standard for me.

Great post. Thanks!

I totally agree Kelly. That is a horrible story for you! I'm so happy that your cavalier has been able to be with you for so long with those health problems. Hey Doctors can be wrong right? Dogs truly are members of our family....I don't think it's too much to ask for people to educate themselves before they buy pets...I know people who spend months learning about plasma tv's before buying one!
Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting!

I completely agree with you - Puppy Mills are bad.. There are still many pet stores that have been around a long time that do get their puppies from small knowledgeable breeders.. Not many though. It is very important to ask for the owner's puppies history - where they are from - you should be able to contact the breeder...
I purchased a King Charles Cavalier from a man who claimed to be a breeder.. had a bunch of claims sold dogs to Melissa Gilbert - been doing it for years... within one week of having our beautiful girl - her vet bills totaled in excess of $850.. Later we discovered she had an enlarged heart and hip dysplasia... She is a family member and is turning 3 years old soon.. Per the vet her life expectancy is about half of the short life span of Cavaliers...
The man was not a breeder but a dog broker - People need to educate themselves on who and where your potential new family member is coming from..
Thank you for your wonderful post
