Every woman who wants to become a mom is faced with the life changing decision, when they have a child will they stay home with their children or work. There is not a right or wrong answer to this question. I personally have experienced both the stay at home mom role and the working mom role and know the pluses and minuses of both. I am currently a stay at home mom with my children so I often think about what I believe are the advantages and disadvantages to being a stay at home mom.
The first advantage of being at home with your children is exactly that, you are with your children every day. You get to experience every bit of life with them. When most people go back to work after having a baby and send them to daycare, a stay at home mom gets to stay with their child and take care of them the way they want to. They do not have to put their baby’s life in anyone else’s hands. You can take them where you want to and have them experience what you want them to. You can also attend school functions or be there for them when they need you to be.
This opportunity can also be seen as a disadvantage. You are with your children 24/7 which is hard. You have little adult interaction when they are little and you get to deal with the mind and thought processes of a toddler. For anyone who is a parent you get my drift, it is hard and sometimes lonely. Not only that, you are the sole person responsible for their well being and happiness. That is a lot of weight and pressure to put on someone.
When you are a stay at home mom you are usually not bringing home a source of income for your family. This can be seen as an disadvantage and an advantage. It is hard because you are completely forfeiting your extra income for the time you get to spend with your precious children. However, your lifestyle may need to change because of this loss. No more doing things like playing for Casumo Free Spins on a daily basis if you don’t have disposable income!
However the idea that you no longer have the role of bringing in money takes a lot of stress off a person. You no longer have that burden and you can put it on your spouse (that’s ok right?). You also don’t have to get up and get dressed to go to work each weekday (no more commuting!) That is a plus, right?
A common thought of a working mom is that a stay at home mom has all the time in the world to get things done. This is quite the opposite. Stay at home moms often consider their jobs just that, being a mom. So it isn’t very common that they have time to themselves. Most of their time is spent either watching the children and keeping them occupied, or doing something for their family. It isn’t common for a stay at home mom to have childcare or to go to a store alone or just go out to lunch/dinner or get their nails done. It is more of a burden to do those things so they are skipped the most. Working moms have lunch breaks and child care to do these types of things. A stay at home does have the time to do what the kids need which is definitely a plus for your family in the long run.
As I explained earlier in the article, there is no right or wrong, better or worse job. Staying at home with your children and being a working mom all have their upsides and downsides. You just need to figure out what works best for you.
